the boston marathon bombers as brothers, tamerlan and dzhokhar tsarnaev. they are from a predominantly muslim region in russia. the 19-year-old brother believed to be extremely dangerous possibly armed with explosives on his person. unclear whether he was injured in the shoot outlast night in which his 26-year-old brother died. it's unclear whether he's injured and hiding somewhere and unable to move, whether he moved, they don't know right now. we're told that the brother was wearing explosives and a triggering device when he died which is why they're worried -- >> the older brother. >> the older brother. this is why they're worried the younger brother could be in a similar situation. this happened overnight and intensified. police say the suspects robbed a convenience store, shot and killed an m.i.t. police officer. i was on the air live when that happened last night, wolf. and as you know, it was no expectation at that time that there was any relation between the two things. but there ended up being. >> and when they heard of a convenience store robbery, stuff like that happens. >> right.
that the authorities believe they know where dzhokhar tsarnaev is, the suspect in the white hat is. and concerns about a third relative, which explains the larger drag net, if you will, and why the entire greater boston area was asked to shelter in place. >> it could explain that, chuck, because there's a contradiction there. if they know where he is, why would they shut down the entire city of boston, which they did like less than an hour ago when governor patrick came out here. there's still a lot of unanswered questions here, but, first, i want to point out, chuck. we're right across at the watertown mall right across the street is the main staging area that you were referring to before. and earlier this morning and we've been here for hours now, we saw convoys of military humvees, buses filled with police, motorcycles, state police officers and all congregating in that staging area in the parking lot right behind us. there's a marshal's department store there. it looked to me at first like there was going to be some, they were planning for some sort of confrontation or assault, we haven't seen tha

and the homemade grenades and exchange with police how dzhokhar tsarnaev escapes? how does he get out of that standoff? i don't fully understand that yet. >> what they said at the news conference -- they said twice he escaped on foot. he abandoned a car they said in watertown and escaped on foot. it does seem to be, based on the news conference that his ties are to watertown. so this is an area that he is familiar with and very comfortable with and he would have the advantage on foot. >> bret: okay, catherine, thank you. house homeland security chairman republic mike mccaul of texas has access to the latest information. he is here with us this evening. first, mr. chairman, thanks for coming back. your thoughts after hearing this press briefing about this man hunt and what they are dealing with. >> i think they have relative confidence where he may be and that's why they are opening up the city. again, they can't clamp down this city for more than 24 hours. like you, i'm a little bit astounded that he he escaped the scene after the carjacking event. but i remain very hopeful and positi
of police searching door to door, floor to floor for the 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. he escaped after an overnight gun battle, which left his older brother dead. police in the suburb of watertown, massachusetts say they're recovering a significant amount of home made explosives at the scenes of last night's violence. and they also say there is no proof yet, repeat, no proof yet of accomplices. a u.s. official says the latest intelligence shows at least as of now no indications the suspects had any direct links to a major al qaeda group or any of its affiliates. let's get the very latest now on the manhunt and the investigation. our national correspondent susan candiotti is joining us. update our viewers here in the united states and around the world, susan, on what we know right now. >> reporter: well, certainly, wolf. the investigation and the search for what happened to the young man we've been calling suspect number two, the younger tsarnaev, has not ended by any stretch of the imagination. they've been working ever since the violence began last night, ever since the manhunt began.
is alive, dzhokhar tsarnaev, 19 years old, a resident of cambridge is being sought. his brother was killed last night in the interaction with police, tamerlan tsarnaev who was 26 years old. it all started last night in cambridge. there was a shootout with an officer at m.i.t. on the m.i.t. campus. that officer having been killed last night, found dead in his police cruiser. the suspects then reportedly carjacked an suv, and a chase ensued. at one point they did release the driver unharmed. they went into watertown which is just outside of cambridge, about 10, 15 minutes outside of cambridge and that's where there was a shootout with police. by 1:30 a.m., the first suspect tamerlan tsarnaev was dead and the second suspect was on the loose and being chased. this morning at about 5:00 a.m. police shut down the mbta. they have also now seen the shutdown of amtrak between boston and providence, a major shutdown. ed davis, commissioner of police, says this is a major man hunt. >> overall at this hour we've seen a lot of activity. they have surrounded the home in cambridge of the suspects where b
, the one they are still trying to find now, dzhokhar tsarnaev was born in kyrgyzstan. his family lives in russia and we're told his father was a public official there at one time. the reason we're told for this extraordinary security in the area of watertown is, of course, because they still don't know where the other of the two brothers, the second bomber is located. they think they know where he is. they believe that's the place they have surrounded and where you just saw kerry sanders reporting but there's a further concern that these two brothers may have had af coccomplices an authorities found another bomb in boston. a device in the charles gate area. they rendered it safe but they are concerned there maybe accomplices. they can't be certain of it. but there's a concern there maybe accomplices at large. you put all of those factors together, and we're told that's the reason for the extraordinary security. there's been a report that one accomplice tried to escape on a train to connecticut. that the train was stopped. we believe now that this is not the case. savannah? >> pete will
two dzhokhar tsarnaev is armed and extremely dangerous, may be wearing a suicide vest. >> indications are strong that the current outstanding party may be wearing a suicide vest. again, all units use extreme caution approaching any party that matches the description of the outstanding party. >> reporter: it began last night. with the robbery of a convenience store in cambridge at approximately 7:30. a surveillance camera inside the store, caught the image of the man eye dented mied five hours earlier of suspect number two in the marathon bombings. on the campus of m.i.t. a shoot-out that left an police officer dead. next, the two men carjacked a rcedes and then led the police on a wild, violent chase >> wha reports that have explosives at the scene. >> reporter: two men firing weapons and tossing explosives at the cars of pursuing police. the chase ended a with a gun fight in a residential neighborhood in watertown, where one resident took these pictures showing bullet holes. >> several explosive devices were discharged from the car at the police officers. in the exchange of the gunfi
going house-to-house in boston, searching for dzhokhar tsarnaev. the second suspect in the bombing his uncle has spoken out, telling him it turn himself in now that his brother tamerlan is dead. eric shaw is in massachusets with the latest. >> reporter: if you lived in boston, chances are you got an e-mail extreme threat alert message, saying shelter in place, that is still in effect, not prevent employees from returning home, governor patrick saying if you go to work, they want you to go home, the city is basically paralyzed. severity is extreme, urgency they say is quote immediate, because dzhokhar tsarnaev is still on the loose. will get dark in boston, we may be back to what went on last night, that chase. and manhunt and gunfire. and ieds police say were thrown from his car he and his brother allegedly hijacked as they went from cambridge across river to watertown. police have been scouring houses in a 20 block area, searching basement, bedrooms and closets for any sign. police saying that there have been pursuing some leads. >> we're progressing through this neighborhood going do
, dzhokhar tsarnaev. a naturalized u.s. citizen, 19 years old, considered extremely dangerous. the hunt is focused, but not confined to a series of communities west of boston proper, including cambridge and watertown. 21 hours since the photo was first released, dzhokhar named on the loose. his older brother, his alleged co-conspirator in the bombing at the marathon died early this morning in a clash with police from which the younger brother escaped. according to one law enforcement source, actually driving over his brother's body. here is the brother's uncle in an emotional plea delivered late this morning. >> i say dzhokhar, if you're alive, turn yourself in and ask for forgiveness. and the victims, from the injured and from those who left, ask for forgiveness from these people. >> we already obviously are learning a lot about these two suspects. we know that dzhokhar who is 19 years old, first came to the united states in 2002, he was 8 years old. his family, he came here on a tourist visa. we know with his mother and his -- at least with his mother. let's go back to the aunt now sp
that the community sort of begins to wrap its head around this, in so far as dzhokhar and tamerlan tsarnaev were part of the communities in which they lived. one was a wrestler, one was a boxer. >> can you state it a little louder, please? >> i was saying how does the community begin to wrap its head around what has happened. given the fact that two of the suspects, dzhokah tsarnaev and his brother, tamerlan tsarnaev, were very much part of the community in which they grew up. they went to local schools. one was competitive boxer, one was a wrestler. by all accounts they were you know, dzhokhar tsarnaev was seen as a nice guy, a shy guy in his high school. but liked. not an outcast by any means. you know how does a community begin to think of, begin to process something like this? >> well, it is what it is. you know people weren't, the fact that they are among us, humanity, some people who are, who are vicious and violent and morally deformed, we're aware of this. look at the people in texas are now experiencing the fact that you know, two prosecutors were murdered by a home-grown texan. people don't
guys are brothers. the man at large is dzhokhar tsarna, tsarnaev and looking to confirm his origin. >> according to mike barnicle and "the boston globe" reporting one of the suspects has lived here for some time, receiving some sort of high school scholarship. >> yeah. the city of cambridge awards a scholarship $2,500 to cambridge high school seniors and others who want to pursue higher education. according to the globe, the man at large, the 19-year-old in the white hat, in 2011, so just two years ago, was the recipient of one of these scholarships. that indicates he has lived in the cambridge area for some time. >> another piece of information that we have picked up over the hours here is that at some time, any time now, the police in boston will be conducting a controlled detonation at the area of calm in charles gate. this is according to their twitter site. i guess if anybody in the area hears something, not to be upset by it because this is a controlled detonation probably, as pete williams was telling us, probably one of the explosives or grenades that were thrown out of the
that dzhokhar tsarnaev, the one everybody is looking for, might be just a few blocks down here at an office complex. a security sensor had been -- had tipped off that there was, authorities, there was some intrusion that led everybody to think he was there. cars were zooming down here with screaming lights, and that turned out to be a wash. so i think that's just another reminder of how cautious we have to be until we know for sure where things stand. what we do know is he's on the loose. we do know -- we don't know -- there's no confidence that they know where he is and whether or not he has any accomplices. that may be an open question at this point. and probably the biggest open question of all is whether there are any more explosive devices, any ieds out there that he's left to maim and kill people that they don't know about. one was found in boston earlier today, and that may be the scariest singleknow, though, th police have been going door-to-door in this area all day. how far along do you think they are in securing the area? because as i understand it, at 12:30 when governor deval p
tsarnaev is dead. suspect number two, dzhokhar tsnaraev, his younger brother, age 19, still unaccounted for. jennifer griffin is live with our national security view on this from our bureau in washington, d.c. we're told they have ties to chechnya. that they could be russian- born but chechnya according to their ethnicity. they spent some time there at least at a younger age, jennifer. what more do we have on that? >> reporter: that is really interesting. when i heard of the name of the younger one, the one with the white cap who is still on the loose, the name dzhokar was very familiar to me. the dzhokar dudivey first president of chechnya was killed. had a violent death by the russians when he used his satellite phone, two missiles came out of the sky and killed him. i remember being in lebanon at the time and remember when he was killed, he was killed in chechnya on april 21st, which of course is coming up this weekend, this sunday. that made me think if these two are chechen nationalists in some way, dzhokar dudiav, dzhokhar tsnaraev accused of planting the boston marathon bomb, that is
of the suspects in the marathon bombings. dzhokhar tsarnaev is at large believed to be armed and extremely dangerous. after his older brother, tamerlan, was killed in a shootout with police early this morning. police are going door-to-door in the boston suburb of watertown where tsarnaev was last seen. the area has seen intense police activity all day long. a metro
brother, dzhokhar tsarnaev, he remains at large right now even though this manhunt continues nonstop. >> investigators are trying to figure out what changed? why they did something so brazen as to rob a convenience store and steal a car. >> maybe they needed money. they thought they could get away. had no money or whatever. >> maybe in that rash this is somewhat of a window into whether or not there was a well-developed plan here or not, but the key is that they became very concerned about explosives. since about 35:30 this morning little has changed in terms of disposition of this search. they've been in one main area here in boston. they've been asking us not to give away tactical positions. they have a delay on our video in case something happens that we can't control at the moment. but they're worried about this suspect having explosives. we believe they have found some ord nants -- in cambridge, that's where they were living. if you hear that, don't panic. >> the older brother who was killed we believe to be wearing an explosive vest, a suicide bombing vest or whatever. and that
for forgiveness. >> that's the 19-year-old, dzhokhar tsarnaev. >> and the uncle, it may have been hard for the viewers to understand everything he said. in addition to what chris was just reporting, he said my family has nothing to do with this family. he feels the shame that's associated with sort of thing. it's a shame on the entire community and the entire chechen community. >> he says his brother is the father of these two suspects. >> yes, the brother is the father of the two men. >> and the father is back over there. and he's living over here, obviously. the uncle is here in the united states. >>> deborah is in watertown right now. wa watch uing all of this unfold. set the scene for the viewers who may just be tuning in. >> reporter: this is an area that we got to just about 5:00 this morning. it was still dark before we arrived here. an entire perimeter was set up in a 20-block radius. we went to one location because it seemed there was a staging area. that staging area was where you see those lights. the traffic lights. there was activity there where you had a lot of law enforc
reference the uncle who pleaded with his nephew, dzhokhar, give yourself up, give yourself up. and of course that is the fervent wish of law enforcement officials for a number of reasons. one is for the survival of dzhokhar tsarnaev because there is a manhunt for him and he will not escape that network of law enforcement at some point. this will not come to a good end. but also from a law enforcement perspective, we need to know who else is out there. he clearly had his brother as an accomplice but was there someone else involved. is this a cell? is it a local cell, home grown? is it foreign operated? is there an al qaeda or other splinter group connection? what did his brother do when he went back to russia, at least to russia? we know he arrived at an airport outside moscow. don't know where he went after that. his father is still -- returned to russia and was angry when called -- angry and grieving when called by reporters today, russian reporters, because -- had no knowledge of what his sons were doing, but was angry and thinking they had been hunted down as targets of some sort of consp
.d. photo of dzhokhar tsarnaev moving from the scene as other people are running from in the terror, he's walking to the corner and turning the corner and we see anymore very high fidelity which investigators in sose figurhere he went after the explosions. >> well, ray, recall that well before the authorities released the photographs of the two individuals they had requested that people in the vicinity of the explosion submit all their digital imagery to the f.b.i. for analysis. so one would certainly hope that the person who had that high definition photograph had supplied it to the f.b.i. well before he found it and decided to publicize the fact. >> suarez: are there new techniques and new machines that save place from having to go frame by frame through videos? leaf throu photographs that can look for a suspect very quickly through enormous data files? richard? >> yes, there are. something i have a fair bit of experience with in my time at the n.y.p.d.. but the new techniques to do analysis are having trouble keeping up with the massive increase in the amount of data that comes in th
'll mispronounce his name. dzhokhar tsarnaev. how do you know him, tell us anything you know about him. >> i went to high school with dzhokhar. i knew him as dzhokhar. he graduated below me. he was good friends, worked at harvard university as a lifeguard. yeah, we partied, good high school friends, and a bunch -- all of my high school -- everybody, we're all like in shock. there is no telltale signs of any kind of malicious behavior from dzhokhar. it's coming as a shock really. >> what town did he live in? can you tell us about his family? anything you may know about his life. >> well, we -- i live on columbia street which is just a street over from norfolk street, so, i mean, he lived literally maybe a block away from me. i mean, as far as i know, i didn't know his close personal family, but i mean, i knew dzhokhar, and he didn't show any malicious sign, no evidence that would lead any of to us really believe he would be capable of something like this. >> did you know his older brother. one that was killed in a fire fight with police officers? >> i did not know his older brother. i didn't even
